History of Pesticide Application
Liquid pest insecticide was the main initial component of any plan to control insect populations from corn fields to the White House.  Eventually, as the danger of the chemicals to the health of humans became apparent, its use was curtailed.  In general, commercial pest control companies altered their services to protect their technicians and ease the public's fears about insecticides being applied inside their homes and businesses.

Non-Repellant Insecticide After years of time and money spent by commercial pest control companies in training technicians not to spray liquid insecticide unless as a last resort, scientists developed new liquid chemistries that would control insect pest populations without the drawbacks of other older products.  These new liquids were called “non-repellants.” Atek uses the most effective and safest of these products called Phantom.  The main difference between this product and its repellant cousins is that they do not scatter insects when applied.

In fact, insects do not even realize they have been exposed and continue their normal existence until it comes to an abrupt end.  This feature allows the commercial pest control applicator to use the known behavioral habits of insect pests to their advantage and limits the amounts of insecticide needed to cover a given area.

Insect Growth Regulators (IGRs)

Insect Growth Regulators used in combination with non-repellant has a strikingly effective ability to eliminate entire colonies of pests.  The IGRs introduce abnormally high levels of hormones to insect pests’ receptor sites in the early stages of life so they often never mature into adults and exposed adults may become sterile or have reduced egg viability.  Gentrol, an IGR, will prevent the current infestation from maturing and limit their ability to breed future generations while the repeated application of residual non-repellant will continually reduce the number of adult insect pests; in other words we will eliminate the problem!

Bedbug Elimination - Bed Bugs are back!

Since the late 1990s beg bugs have returned stronger than ever mainly because of:

Adult bed bugs can live a year without a meal.  Dark spotting and staining on sheets, mattresses, pillows and clothing are the most visible signs of bed bugs. They come out for meals at night time and feed exclusively on blood.  Bedbugs can travel in suitcases, bags or shoes or second hand furniture.  Some treatments include: pesticides, steam or heat treatment or vacuuming.  These treatments only attack seen bugs.

Common options for eradicating bed bugs in a mattress:  throw out the mattress and box spring, treat with pesticides repeatedly or vacuuming.

The best way to salvage an existing mattress or protect a new mattress and box spring from bed bugs is to fully encase it.  Encasements also increase the efficiency of control effort by allowing for early detection.

Featured in Pest Control Technologies magazine, owner Stuart Harper was written up using Bell Lab's new Provoke Mouse Attractant.  Stuart came home late to find mice in his home.  Luckily he had some Trapper 24/7 mouse traps and some Provoke in his car.  He removed all foodstuffs and appliances off his counters and set several traps with Provoke.  He went to bed and later woke up to find several mice caught in traps being attracted to the Provoke as a dessert cart for mice.  He has since had his technician use this in all mice situations.
